Icelandic films at The London Film Festival

The arrival of the hefty programme for The London Film Festival heralds two events; the end of the British summer and the chance for me to meticulously plan what I can view for free on a press pass, only for my planned timetable to backfire due to an Underground delay or something similar.

This time around Iceland is represented twice, both in the festival’s Shorts Cuts & Animation segment.

Rekyjavik-born New York City resident Isold Uggadottir’s Committed / Njalsgata is part of The Young, a selection of shorts examining growing up.

Showing as part of the People Are Strange selection of films that are expected to provoke a “mental hangover” is Benedikt Erlingsson’s The Nail / Naglinn. Erlingsson is perhaps better known as an actor who has appeared in Circledrawers and Lars von Trier’s excellent The Boss of It All.

De nombreux parents et enseignants s'inquiètent de la qualité de la langue lorsqu'ils voient les jeunes communiquer avec des messages textes codés.

Par exemple, la lettre « t » remplace le « tu es » et le « c » devient « c'est ».

Les résultats de travaux d'une chercheuse albertaine montrent que ces adolescents ne perdent pas leur capacité à épeler correctement et à écrire une phrase complète.

Selon la Pre Connie Varnhagen de l'Université de l'Alberta, les enfants qui sont déjà forts en orthographe le demeurent, peu importe qu'ils envoient des messages instantanés ou qu'ils écrivent des mots incomplets.

Le scénario ne s'inverse pas pour autant chez ceux qui éprouvent des difficultés à écrire correctement. Ils continuent de le faire avec des fautes et auront aussi de la difficulté avec les acronymes propres aux messages instantanés.

Pour en arriver à ces résultats, la Pre Varnhagen a étudié comment des jeunes de 12 à 17 ans communiquaient par message instantané, avant de les soumettre à un test d'orthographe traditionnel.

En outre, l'auteure de la recherche affirme que le langage de la messagerie instantanée peut faire travailler les neurones des adolescents, puisqu'ils doivent se concentrer pour exprimer rapidement ce qu'ils veulent communiquer.

Film on Iceland’s Ring Road Remade

Filmmaker Eysteinn Gudni Gudnason intends to remake Fridrik Thór Fridriksson’s movie Hringurinn (“The Ring”) from 1985, which was shot from a car driving around the country without any actors being involved.

“It fascinated me even before I watched it,” Gudnason told Fréttabladid. The filmmaker got the idea of a remake two years ago and will start executing his project next week.

Two cameras will be used for shooting, one of which will be fastened to a modern electric car provided by the company 2012. The other camera will be will be on the roof of a fuel-consuming Porsche, which Gudnason will drive behind the electric car.

“They are signs of old and new times,” the filmmaker described. He plans to premiere his movie, Hringurinn 2, next year, when 25 years have passed since Fridriksson released the original.

The UK and the Netherlands are concerned by the failure of Icelandic banks Kaupthing, Glitnir and Landsbanki because they had welcomed their subsidiaries and branches with open arms, even though their authorities had been at least partially alerted to the risks hanging over those banks. The two countries are now demanding that Iceland pay them astronomical sums (more than €2.7bn (£2.3bn) to the UK and over €1.3bn to the Netherlands, plus interest at 5.5pc in compensation.

After reading some Icelandic blogs over the last few days it seems that some bloggers are starting to avoid the issue of the economic disaster that happened here and is still happening. They admit that openly, and who can blame them when the news and rumours get worse every week, when people think that things cant get any worse. It is like Murphy’s law, if some thing can go wrong, it will go wrong. The Icelandic version of Murphy’s law is that wen things cant get any worse, they usually do.

The question that remains when thinking about this rollercoster of a society we call Iceland is this: What the hell happened?

In very short, everyone failed the public. The people’s savings and pension funds where used as gambling money to either gamble on the money markets, money laundering for various organisations, to steal money for personal gain, to drain all the money from Iceland and everyone else that got sucked in to this largest scam in modern history.

Majority Supports Iceland’s New Government

According to a new opinion poll undertaken by the Stöd 2 news program, 67.4 percent of respondents support the new Social Democrat-Left-Green coalition. However, the poll also concluded that the Independence Party is regaining support.

Horses Fall Through Ice on Reykjavík Pond

Nearly 20 horses and riders fell through the ice on the frozen Reykjavík Pond during a tölt show yesterday, organized by insurance company VÍS's Championship League in Horse Sports. Both animals and humans were rescued but some horses grew very weak.
